My ponysona on the job. Here he's replacing a relay in a block signal. The "EN" on his hard hat is the logo for the Equestria National Railway (ala Canadian National noodle logo).
We have yet to see lineside poles in the cartoon, but I went ahead and added them here (Chrome collects insulators so those blue and amber ones will be replaced at some point
). Electric railroad signals are canon in Equestria, as evidenced by the crossing gates in The Last Roundup.
For the record these poles (and the signal) are done to Missouri Pacific RR standards (the MP line through here had this setup).

My grandfather was a track laborer for the Missouri Pacific on the Beaumont subdivision working between the Lake Houston bridge and Hull, Texas. He had wooden spike barrels behind the house full of green glass insulators. I used to read the safety rule books he kept and play with the old trackside telephone that was once used in the motorcar house.
