Description

After around 9 months, I finally finished this. I found this Airfix 1:24 scale model kit at a thrift store. The box was taped shut so I couldn't see if it was all there, but since it was only $8 I decided to risk it (I've purchased model kits secondhand before, and got burned by either damaged or missing parts). At first glance everything appeared to be there.
I then left it alone for several months until August, when I finally started working on it. Halfway through it I found I was missing 4 pieces :S . Airfix is in Britain, but I contacted them anyway and they sent me the parts, and work continued... until I found I needed 3 more, and had to get a new canopy frame to replace a damaged one I thought I could save. 2 weeks ago I contacted them again and they sent me the parts, but this time they wanted 4 pounds for them. I have no way to send them it until I get a debit card from my bank sometime this week, and then I have to make an international phone call to pay it!

Overall the model, is CRAP. The molds for the model were first made in the late 70's, and most parts wouldn't fit together right no matter what I did. It's too bad because everything is movable on it: Wheels, control surfaces, landing gear, if it moves on the real one it moves on this (somewhat anyway), plus the motor and gun access panels are removable.

The decals were for a P-51 called "Big Beautiful Doll", but one of the name decals was damaged, and the nose used around a dozen decals for the checkerboard scheme, so I went ahead and did a custom paint job and decals. ;) (unfortunately the factory ones have a flat finish, which stands out against the silver) The blue is CSX blue, and the silver chrome aluminum (which unfortunately smudges easily).

Overall I'm not really happy with it. Might try a version 2 later on with a Revell or Hasegawa 1:32 scale one.
